Bridesmaid Speech

The maid of honor is the best friend of the bride. It is through her that the audience gets the most insight and information regarding the bride. She may have her whole wedding speech written out on cue cards or she may decide to speak briefly from the bottom of her heart about the bride.

Most importantly, the friendship between the bride and maid of honor must be brought out through the maid of honor wedding speech so it can create an impact on the audience.

Humor can be used in a maid of honor speech. If she has known the bride since childhood, then there will be a huge store of amusing anecdotes from their many years of growing up together on which she can share. She can pick from a list of possible stories to come up with the most interesting story among that list.

A maid of honor wedding speech need not be very long. As a way of opening the speech, it might be appropriate for her to tell the guests how she met the bride. In doing so, keep in mind to keep the opening short as the audience has to listen to a lot of wedding speeches. A simple principle to keep in mind is the KISS principle, which stands to Keep It Short and Simple.

As the bride’s best friend, invariably, she will know a lot about the groom. In her speech, she may use some of this information. Remember not to embarrass the newlyweds though. Always make enthusiastic and sincere comments and compliments about the couple, but never exaggerate.

Share thoughts from the female point of view. The audience has listened to the stories and opinions of the best man already. Now it is her turn to share something in favor of the bride. Indeed, her role is like the best man – flatter the bride, congratulate the bridal couple, tease, and toast the bride a little.

If she is married herself, she may want to impart some marital wisdom and kind advice from her own experiences within her maid of honor speech. Some will even include a meaningful piece of poetry or inspirational quotes when their own words are not quite enough.

A maid of honor wedding speech need not be the greatest speech ever. She should not feel under pressure at all to give a great performance since it will be sufficient if she allows the depth of her close friendship with the bride to shine through during her speech. As long as she maintains this main focus during her speech, it will be appreciated by the bride and everyone in the wedding reception.

Choosing the Bridesmaid

The bride has a special chief attendant who holds the title and position of Maid of Honor or Bridesmaid. So, the bride makes an important decision in choosing her, with the right focus on who can shoulder the responsibility of being with the bride throughout the day and make it up for her best day in life.

Do not get the wrong notion that the bridesmaid accompanies the bride only on her wedding day. She is through all thick and thin, months before the wedding and through the whole social affair. She is usually asked to assist the bride in preparing the logistics of wedding as an event and also addressing invitations and the most importantly helping the bride while she is going round for shopping. On the principal day, the bridesmaid is expected to provide both mental and emotional support to the bride, so as to boost her tensed mind.

She should possess the skill to complement your strength and weakness, providing strength and counterbalancing the weaknesses. When your sister acts as the maid of honor, make sure that she is detail-oriented, level-headed and calm and composed. She shoulders the main responsibility of selecting the wedding venue and ceremony. She should convey good speech about her opinions about the wedding favors and decorations. When the bride arrives, she makes sure that you have everything ready at hand.

The bridesmaid also assists in the prime responsibility of choosing the entire wedding attire and registering for wedding gifts.
If the bride has any message to convey to the other relatives and friends, then the bridesmaid on behalf of the bride intimates her words to the others.Sometimes, when the bride and groom are getting married, it’s the bridesmaid who holds the ring and bouquet.

No particular rule is planned in selecting the chief attendant. It is completely a personal decision that steers the decision on the right path. The bride enjoys the full freedom to adopt her closest friend of her sister as the bridesmaid. Hence, the rule leaves no scope for conflict amongst your friends or families. But at the end of it all, the bridesmaid is definitely the closest acquaintance of the bride and she provides full support in every possible way to arise the confidence in the bride’s mind.

To be or not to be a bridesmaid

Behind every bride there is a bridesmaid. Nowadays most brides want to be accompanied by as many bridesmaids possible and the bride chooses how many to ask. You know what they say: “the more, the merrier and they must all dress alike”.

Historically, no person of status went out unattended, and the size of the retinue was closely calculated to be appropriate to the family’s social status. Then, as now, a large group of bridesmaids provided an opportunity for showing off the family’s social status and wealth.

The maid of honor status is not a commercial invention of our time. The tradition dates from ancient Roman times, where the bridesmaids formed a real human shield to hide the bride from kidnappers.

Another version of the legend says that ten witnesses were required at a wedding in order to outsmart evil spirits (believed to attend marriage ceremonies) by dressing in identical clothing to the bride and groom, so that the evil spirits would not know who was getting married.

In 19th century England, there was a belief that ill-wishers could administer curses and taint the wedding. In Victorian wedding photographs, for example, the bride and groom are frequently dressed in the same fashion as other members of the bridal party.

Traditionally, bridesmaids are chosen from unwed young women of marriageable age, and they also organize the bridal shower or bachelorette party (US) or hen night (Australia and UK). It’s a great responsibility to manage things in the right direction, be sure to do your homework well!

Since modern bridesmaids, unlike their historical counterparts, can no longer rely on having their clothes and travel expenses paid for by the bride’s family, and are sometimes even assessed fees to pay for parties that the bride wants to have before the wedding, it has become customary for the bride to present the bridesmaids with gifts as a sign of gratitude for the support and financial commitment that comes with their roles. It has become equally customary for wary women who are invited to serve as bridesmaids to first ask after the amount of time, energy, and money that the bride expects from them before accepting this position. If you know the bride is very demanding, be sure to check with her before making any important decision. But be cautious, do not overdo the questions, take into account the bride already has her head wrapped in the wedding preparation. Act with discretion!

On the day of the wedding, the principal duty is to provide practical and emotional support. The bridesmaid might assist the bride with dressing and, if needed, help the bride manage her veil, a bouquet of flowers, a prayer book, or the train of her wedding dress during the day. If there is a reception after the wedding, the maid of honor may be asked to offer a toast to the newlyweds.
